A burning electrical smell at home is a serious warning sign. It can mean an overheated socket, loose contact, damaged cable, wrong breaker rating or a fault inside the electrical panel.
Switch off the appliance that may be causing the smell, avoid using the hot socket again, and disconnect the circuit if you see melting, dark marks or sparking. If the source is unclear, turn off power and call an electrician.
Loose terminals, overloaded extension cords, old wiring, high-power appliances on one circuit and poor breaker selection can heat insulation and plastic parts. Replacing only the visible part may leave the real fault in place.
If the smell comes back, the breaker trips, a plug gets hot or the panel smells warm, the line should be checked under load. A proper inspection covers sockets, cable size, breaker rating, contacts and panel condition.
